AD vs BC: Understanding the Difference
AD (Anno Domini) / CE (Common Era)
Years in AD count forward from Year 1. For example, 2024 comes after 2023. It represents the "Common Era".
BC (Before Christ) / BCE (Before Common Era)
Years in BC count backward. The higher the number, the further back in history. For example, 500 BC happened before 100 BC. There is no "Year 0".
Pro Tip: Our calculator handles both AD and BC dates, accurately computing the spans across the transition period.
