What is the GEDCOM Format?

GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) is the universal file format (.ged) used to transfer family tree data between different software programs like Ancestry, MyHeritage, and Gramps. It represents family nodes textually using hierarchical tags:

  • INDI: Declares an individual member.
  • FAM: Groups husbands, wives, and children.
  • BIRT / DEAT: Logs birth and death events.
