🧬

What is the GEDCOM Format?

GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) is the universal file format (.ged) used to transfer family tree data between different software programs like Ancestry, MyHeritage, and Gramps. It represents family nodes textually using hierarchical tags:

  • INDI: Declares an individual member.
  • FAM: Groups husbands, wives, and children.
  • BIRT / DEAT: Logs birth and death events.

Our tool includes a 100% client-side parser to read and write valid GEDCOM files instantly without server-side processing.

📊

Custom CSV Import Layout

To import massive datasets from Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, save your spreadsheet in CSV format using these column headers:

id,name,gender,birthDate,deathDate,birthPlace,occupation,spouseId,fatherId,motherId,notes

*Ensure fatherId and motherId entries correspond exactly to the unique ID of the parents' rows to link branches correctly.

🔬

Cousinhood & Kinship Traversal

Our built-in relationship calculator traverses the family tree graph to locate the closest common ancestor of any selected pair of nodes:

  • Cousin Degree: Calculated based on the number of generations between the common ancestor and the closest relative (e.g., sharing grandparents = 1st cousins, sharing great-grandparents = 2nd cousins).
  • Times Removed: The difference in generational depth between the two selected relatives.

🔒 Privacy-First & Zero-Server Data Security

Your family history is highly personal. Standard online tree builders require creating an account and hosting your information on cloud databases, often subjecting your relatives' details to public search indexes. Our tool operates on a purely client-side architecture: no signups are required, no database is queried, and zero data is sent to our servers. Clicking "Share Tree" compresses the entire tree into a local query string directly in your browser, maintaining absolute data sovereignty.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What formats can I import to build my family tree?

We support three formats: GEDCOM (.ged), which is the standard format used by Ancestry and MyHeritage; CSV (comma-separated values) which you can write in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets; and our custom JSON layout backup file.

Q Is my family tree private?

Yes. Our tool is 100% serverless. All data is processed client-side in your browser, and no information is ever sent to or stored on our servers.

Q How does the Relationship Calculator work?

Select two family members on the canvas and click 'Calculate Relationship'. The tool will traverse the connection path and output the correct kinship term, such as 'Second Cousin, Once Removed'.

Q How do I share my family tree without a database?

Click 'Generate Share Link'. The tool will compress your tree data into a compact URL string. Anyone who clicks the link will instantly decode and load your tree in their browser.

Q Can I print my family tree on large canvas paper?

Yes. Export your tree to the SVG or PDF format. Since they are vector formats, you can scale them to any paper size (like A3 or poster sizing) without losing quality.
