OFFICIAL GAME RULES: 8-BALL vs 9-BALL

🎱 8-BALL RULES DETAILED

  • GROUP ASSIGNMENT
Solids (1-7) vs. Stripes (9-15). The table is open after the break. The group is assigned to a player only when they pocket a ball from that group on a legal shot. Pocketing balls on the break does not assign groups.
  • TURN ORDER
You must always hit a ball from your assigned group first. Failing to hit your group first, scratching the cue ball, or failing to hit a rail after contact constitutes a foul.
  • 8-BALL POCKETING
The 8-ball (black) must be pocketed last in a designated pocket. Pocketing the 8-ball early, scratching the cue ball on the same shot as pocketing the 8-ball, or pocketing it in the wrong pocket results in an instant loss of the game.
  • FOULS & BALL-IN-HAND
If a player commits a foul, the opponent receives Ball-in-Hand, allowing them to place the cue ball anywhere on the table.

💎 9-BALL RULES DETAILED

  • SEQUENTIAL TARGETS
Only balls 1 through 9 are used. You must always strike the lowest numbered ball currently on the table first. Hitting any other ball first is a foul.
  • LEGAL STRIKES
Any ball pocketed on a legal strike counts (even if you hit the lowest ball first and it bounces off and pockets a higher numbered ball). If a ball is legally pocketed, you retain your turn.
  • WIN CONDITION
You win the game by legally pocketing the 9-ball at any time, which can be done directly when it is the last ball, or via a combination shot (striking the lowest ball first and deflecting it to pocket the 9-ball).
  • FOULS & BALL-IN-HAND
Fouls (wrong ball hit first, scratch, or balls off table) award the opponent Ball-in-Hand anywhere on the table, giving them immediate offensive placement.

COMPARISON: POOL vs SNOOKER

🤝 KEY SIMILARITIES

  • EQUIPMENT
Both games are played using a cue stick, a white cue ball, and pockets on a felt-covered slate table.
  • PHYSICS & COLLISION
The fundamental mechanics of elastic collisions, ghost-ball aiming, cut angles, and tangent paths are identical.
  • SPIN (ENGLISH)
Topspin (follow), backspin (draw), and sidespin (english) behave the same way on both tables to control ball paths and rebounds.

🔄 MAIN DIFFERENCES

Table Size & Cushions:Snooker tables are larger (12x6 ft) with rounded pocket openings. Pool tables are smaller (7-9 ft) with angular cushions.
Ball Count & Size:Snooker uses 22 smaller balls (15 reds + 6 colors + cue ball). Pool uses 10 or 16 larger balls.
Scoring System:Snooker is point-based (reds = 1pt, colors = 2 to 7pts). Pool is objective-based (clear group/sequence).
Spotting Rules:In Snooker, colors are pocketed and spotted back until all reds are gone. In Pool, pocketed balls stay in pockets.

Tips & Best Practices

💡
Use backspin (draw) when you want the cue ball to roll backward after impact to avoid double-hits or scratches.
💡
When aiming cut shots, focus on matching the center of the cue ball with the outer edge of the target ball (the ghost ball contact point).
💡
Always hit the lowest number ball first in 9-Ball to avoid giving your opponent ball-in-hand.
💡
In Practice mode, use the Coach AI suggestions to study cut angles and estimate the exact power needed.
Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the main difference between 8-Ball and 9-Ball Pool?

In 8-Ball Pool, you are assigned either solids or stripes and must pocket all 7 of your group before pocketing the 8-ball. In 9-Ball Pool, you play with balls numbered 1-9, must always hit the lowest-numbered ball first, and win by pocketing the 9-ball at any time (including via combos).

Q In 9-Ball, what happens if I strike a different ball first instead of the lowest-numbered ball?

In 9-Ball Pool, striking any ball other than the lowest-numbered ball on the table first is a foul. This immediately ends your turn and awards "Ball-in-Hand" to your opponent, allowing them to place the cue ball anywhere on the felt to take their next shot.

Q How does the Coach AI shot suggestion work?

Our local Coach AI geometry solver calculates straight lines from the cue ball to all valid target balls, and from those target balls to all 6 pockets. It flags clear, makeable paths and visualizes the exact ghost-ball alignment line, recommended hitting force, and spin.

Q What is the "Ghost Ball" concept in aiming?

The ghost ball is the imaginary position the cue ball must occupy at the exact split-second of collision to send the target ball straight along the target-to-pocket line. Visualizing this point is the key to mastering real-world pool angles.

Q Can I undo my shots if I miss?

Yes! In Practice Mode, we have an Undo button that rolls back all balls to their exact positions before the last strike. This lets you retry the same shot with different power and spin settings until you master it.

Q How do I share a custom trick shot layout?

In Practice Mode, you can drag and position balls anywhere on the felt. Clicking "Share Layout" serializes the ball coordinates, encrypts them using our local XORCipher, and copies a direct URL to your clipboard for friends to try.
